Education & Skill Development

Inmates are employed in workshops specialising in metal work, powder coating, upholstery, laundry and maintenance services. These workshops produce products for government, private and commercial organisations.

Employment is also available in internal and external grounds maintenance, wildlife care, building maintenance, clerical work and full-time education. All inmates, other than those excluded by illness or disability, are expected to work.

The Adult Education and Vocational Training Institute (AEVTI) provides literacy, numeracy and communications courses in all centres. Many centres also offer vocational courses such as Information Technology, Horticulture, Construction, Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft.

The Complex has a world famous wildlife centre which gives inmates the chance to work with the NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Service (WIRES) and Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Services, caring for injured, orphaned and sick animals.
